my first 30 for 30 remix!

The first time that I read about Kendi Everyday's 30 for 30 remix, I really wanted to try it! Too bad I wasn't quite ready for that kind of commitment. I had just started dating the idea of a daily outfit blog, and remixing seemed like the blog equivalent of moving in together, I needed more time. Now that I have been steady with my outfit posts (first on my tumblr, and now here), I am ready to take this relationship to the next level. Check out Kendi's post about the rules (and you can even buy her remixing guide for $4) and here are the additional ones that I will be following:
  • starting mine on January 31, 2011 (because I have to start things on a Monday)
  • preparing to only get one outfit out of each weekend - mine will probably end on March 6th
  • no shopping for me until after March 25th.
Why the extra rules? Well, I usually work on Saturdays, so I am in workout clothes or sweats all day. I am just planning ahead because I would really like to get the 30 outfits out of my remix. The extension on the 'no shopping' is because I missed the point of the remix entirely and pre-shopped for it. I will be remixing 5 new items... woops! I have also been on a little bit of a shopping bender that needs to end if I am ever going to reach my savings goals. Anyway, on to the clothes!

hello

last outfit before the remix

last day before the remix

This weekend was full of frantic swim and dive district make ups. Snow canceled everything on Friday, so on Saturday I headed from my usual 3 hours of dive practice to a super long timed finals, district swim meet. Before heading back to the pool for the dive meet on Sunday, I was able to meet Jenny and Dagny for a walk around Reston Town Center. This is also the last time that I will wear my Uggs for the next 30-ish days, since I start my 30 for 30 remix this week (hence the title, last outfit before the remix).

I was kind of happy to have my outfit pictures done by someone else, at a different location! It made it fun! In all my excitement, I nearly slipped off the marble at least 10 times!

    the sincerest form of flattery

    the sincerest form of flattery

I am a total copycat. I saw this post from Tania and just knew that I had to copy her style! I have been dying to wear this shirt on my blog ever since I started it. I love graphic tees, but have a hard time figuring out how to wear them in a stylish way. This outfit was such an A+ that I just had to do it too! Good thing you don't get marked down for copying off of someone else in the world of fashion blogging.... I would totally be expelled for cheating if that were the case!

The craziest thing is that I have had this skirt since 2004, the shirt since mid 2009, and the sweater for at least 4 months - yet I don't think I could have come up with this on my own! Maybe it is just the theme of the day, but Jessica mentioned today how lucky we all are to have so many sources for wearable, everyday fashion! It makes me realize that I should really look at shopping my closet a little more. I'm excited about the 30 for 30 remix for just that reason!

    cold day, hot pink

Okay, you caught me... I bought this sweater in two colours, with a $15 price tag I couldn't resist it. I was actually wearing the cream one when I stopped at LOFT with my roommate on Sunday. What can say? I am a sucker for warm sweaters and hot pink!

I love the way this whole outfit came together! I think navy and hot pink just classically go together. Recently I think my wardrobe has been a bit more toned down, less about bright colours and more about jewel tones, so it's nice to have such a bright and cheery sweater in the mix, especially one that keeps me so warm! I also noticed while editing the pictures that my hair rubber band matches, again. This was not intentional, but maybe my subconscious remembering the late 80's early 90's and all my matching scrunchies...  (I even sold scrunches at my 8th grade economics fair - I learned a valuable lesson that day: 7th and 8th graders don't buy hand made scrunchies.)

    thrifted!

    case of the mondays

It's such a strange feeling to get up for a full work week after having Christmas, New Years, and then MLK day so close together. Especially since I feel like I have been going like the energizer bunny with swim and dive team, other swim and dive lessons, shopping, making time for friends, and for myself... you know, that whole work/life balance!

As part of that 'work/life balance' thing, I got my butt up and to the gym for a 6 am spinning class. It was a great class, but I don't think I'll be posting any pictures of me in my padded cycling shorts!! Then I took my time getting ready for work and met my mom and nephew at Starbucks for some morning coffee. I totally lost track of time and texted my boss 5 minutes before I was supposed to be in that I would be late. He is kinda amazing and let me take an extra hour! So here I am, a work/life balancing master! I made it to the gym, spent some time with family, and was able to make it to work with a smile on my face!

As for my outfit and the title, this is the first time that I have really gotten some gems at a thrift store! My shirt and shoes were both purchased at Unique in Falls Church, VA. I really think I need to incorporate more second hand shopping into my life, after the 30 for 30 of course! I guess that falls into my save/spend balance that I really need to work on as well!

    no strings attached

    no strings attached

Sunday was bitter cold! After being out late the night before, I skipped my planned long run in favor of a 40 minute treadmill run. Then headed out to Arlington with my roommate to meet DC and some other girls for brunch and a movie. I usually set up my tripod and take my pictures with my handy wireless remote. But today I handed my camera to my roommate and had her take the pictures... big mistake! :) She kept making me laugh, and the pictures get progressively sillier.

The day got even sillier from there though! Somehow we ended up with a magnum of champagne for mimosas and a long wait for our food, you do the math. Okay, I'll do it: 6 girls + very large bottle of champagne + no food = silliness, laughter, and fun! The walk from the Arlington Rooftop Grill to the theater was full of giggles and knee slapping, along with shivering and teeth chattering. As for the movie, it was a perfect chick flick! I highly recommend watching it, even if you wait for it to come out on video.

      day and night

      day and night

Not only do I not post pictures of what I wear on Saturdays, usually I don't even take them. That is because usually, I don't really get dressed on Saturdays during high school swim and dive season. Coaching certainly kills my winter social life, but it's totally worth it!

On Saturday I woke up early and decided that it would be great to just jam my day full of things to do! So my roomie and I got dressed super quickly and headed to Unique, one of our favorite thrift stores. I got some great, hardly worn pieces from Banana Republic, and some awesome Clarks shoes that I wore on Monday! My roommate found two coach bags from the 80's (we think). They are beautiful! The leather had really held up and the craftsmanship is wonderful!

We had limited time because I had to work midday. I had just enough time to throw together an outfit that would work with a bed head pony tail! I got the sweater the night before for $15 at my local LOFT. I am just thrilled with it! I have been jonesing for some new sweaters ever since I purged everything in my closet that had unrepairable holes. That pretty much included all of my sweaters - granted they were all from 2007 and before.

So here's the day look (did I mention that it was freezing and my roommate was laughing at me... no? well it was literally freezing and my roommate was literally laughing at me):

And now for the night look... I came home after dive practice, took a little rest, and decided that since I didn't have to babysit (I know, with swim and dive team and babysitting, I sound like I am in high school... maybe if I did a better job touching up my pictures you'd think that I was in high school...) I should head into the city to meet up with DC and some friends for a night out. Since it was hella cold and we were going to a little hole in the wall bar, this sweater should make the move from day to night.

So I paired the same sweater and scarf with dark jeans and my tall brown boots to get this causal outfit.

Friday Addams (Wednesday's happier sister... from the Addams Family)

      DSC_0025

The title kinda explains how I felt wearing this outfit. It certainly wasn't the intention as I was getting dressed on Friday morning, but sometimes and outfit takes on a life of its own. The hairstyle came about when I realized that swimming the night before and then going to bed with a pony tail probably wasn't my brightest idea ever. Yet I always forget that when I am going to sleep with a slightly damp, messy top knot! Lucky for me, I can braid like a champ and my curling iron heats up in less than a minute. Quick braid, a couple of curls to the ends, and TA-DA! I was ready for work!

It has been such a cold winter (with not a lot of snow at all... sadface) that I have gotten really used to layering my outfits. It's the only way to stay warm in my office. I have on my white shirt from waitressing that really needs to be replaced, under the dress that I stole from traded with DC for, and my striped sweater that is so not me that it is! I also can't believe how dorky I am that I matched my hair rubber band to my tights... :)
