painting the trim white

Untitled

When I moved into my place in July, I knew that the first thing I wanted to change was the color of the trim on the back door and window. It just seemed out of place to me that they were wood and not white, like all the other trim in the house.

But, with my painting/home improvement track record somewhat spotty... I waited, and waited, and waited until I had a whole weekend to make sure that I could finish the entire project. Previously I have gotten one coat of paint, halfway done on one wall. Skipped taping and ended up ruining electrical plates, floors, carpets, and left behind appliances unpainted. But this time had to be different. And I had to get it done before hanging the curtains that I got for Christmas!

I went to Home Depot on Saturday afternoon with my parents and got everything that I needed. Then I used a liquid sander/deglosser to prep the wood and was able to prime 10 minutes later.

Then on Sunday I caulked all the cracks and nail holes from when the trim was installed and applied 2 coats of paint. It was really very simple.

In hind sight, I should have done a second coat of primer (or used a thicker primer maybe, I used Kilz 2), but after 2 coats of paint, the trim looks pretty good! It's certainly an improvement from before!

You can kind of also see my new rug. I got it on amazon and I have been so happy with it! I like how it makes the room look a little more complete and gives Penny and cozy place to lay on the floor.
