from Reston to Virginia Square - 17 miles of fun!

Running from Reston to VA Square!

With the Wiehle - Reston East Metro finally open, sitting just about 15 miles away from the Ballston Metro station, the girls and I figured we might as well try a run out/ride back long run! My mom always tells me stories about running away from her house in Germany and taking the train back while she was training for her second marathon. It always sounded nice not to have to turn around mid-run, and let me tell you, it is! Amanda and I have been dropped off in Ballston to run home before, so I sorta knew where we were going and about how long the run would be.

So Lauren and I met at my place at 6am so that we could run the 1.6 miles to the metro station to meet Joanna. (We were lucky that Joanna wanted to park at metro for a quick getaway after our run, but even luckier that she agreed to drive me and Lauren back to my house!) It was almost perfect timing to meet Joanna at 6:30am, but we failed to mention that we were coming from Sunrise Valley instead of from the trail. We ended up meeting at the Wiehle/W and OD trail intersection and were off!

We ran our usually 1 min run/1 min walk and talked and chatted about everything under the sun, which is pretty usually for a long run. As we ran, I made us stop at signs showing our distance or a landmark, so that we could document the run! It was a fun way to break up the run as we ran from Reston, through Vienna, Fairfax County, Falls Church, and into Arlington!

You'll notice that I said that we were going to run to Ballston and the title says Virginia Square, well... we were going to run to Ballston, stopping at the Starbucks a block off Fairfax, but Lauren suggested that we just keep going on Fairfax to the Starbucks right by the metro station. She thought it was just the other entrance to the Ballston station, but once we got there, we realized we had overshot our distance a bit and made it all the way to Virginia Square!

It ended up working out perfectly because Joanna was about 1.6 miles behind me and Lauren, since we started at my house. So it meant that everyone go in at least 15. Plus, the Starbucks was right by the metro entrance, which is super convenient after running 17 miles. You don't want to do any more walking than you have to after that kind of mileage! So that was our selfie filled first long, long run for this years Marine Corps Marathon! I'm already feeling like I am doing a better job training this year than I did last year! And after 17 miles last weekend, I'm ready for some shorter runs at the beach with Reid this weekend. :)
