whole 30 - week 1

Whole 30 weekendFirst 5 days whole 30

I have been talking about going back to strict Paleo for MONTHS! I planned on, then didn't follow through with, doing the 21 Day Sugar Detox after Thanksgiving, and then jumping into the Whole 30 ahead of the game in January. But that didn't happen. Instead I ate crap I NEVER eat over the holidays (all gluten free, but trust me, there is a lot of gluten free crap out there!), and I really feel like my energy was suffering.

So after a lot of coordination with Reid (so that we could still celebrate the new year together, on Jan 1 and 2) and with my running girls, we started the Whole 30 together on January 5th! I bought the book, It Starts With Food, but only took the time to read the section about modifying the program for athletes (which boils down to eat another meal and more fruit if you need to) before jumping into the program. Here is a 4 page PDF with the rules and what it's all about!

January is one of my busiest months because I am jam packed with high school swim and dive AND club swim meets! So going into the Whole 30 this month meant that I had to be prepared for meals. My meals so far (in week 1) have all been repeats of variations on the same few dishes, so that things stay easy. I have been making meatballs, eggs, chicken taco salads, and eating a TON of avocados! Thank goodness they are 10 for $10 right now! I have one little confession to make though, my bacon is technically not Whole 30 approved... I need bacon in my life, so I decided that I would make this one, tiny exception and the sugar in the bacon is cane juice and it's less than 2%... so I am making like Elsa and letting it go. :)

So here's what I have been eating!

I will be working to update recipes as I make Whole 30/paleo food this month. I am using instagram to help keep myself accountable, so you can follow along there too!

Today is day 8 and all in all I feel GREAT! I have been having some major muscle fatigue when swim, due to the intensity of the workouts, but have been trying to combat that with some apple sauce packages at the end of my lane and modifying the intensity, though I am hoping that things continue to get better as the weeks progress! This weekend I will be out of town with the swim team, so it'll be a challenge eating out! I am bringing a TON of food with me that I can eat cold. As I remember, our rooms had mini fridges last year, so that should help! I will also pick up some larabars, just in case.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't sure I could make it through the first week before I started, but at this point, I feel like maybe this is how I should always be eating! :)
