Take the Job

Raise your hand if you always thought direct sales looked like a cute little hobby, but didn't believe that there was actually money to be made.

*raises hand and types one handed*

Seriously, my hand is totally up here! In fact, I had proof in not one, but three tries at it. No matter how much I loved the products, how many trainings I went to, I just never felt driven to go into peoples homes with a bunch of stuff and pitch it. (Now, with two of those businesses, I was lucky enough to break even, but one was a major loss...)

So when I heard about Beautycounter, I was super interested, but my past experience made me say "thank you, but no thank you" when Jen, now my managing director, told me she thought I'd be great at Beautycounter and asked me if I would be interested in learning more. She accepted my answer and seven months later, I decided, on my own, without ever being asked again, that it was worth a shot.

But what she should have said is "take the job, Liz, you have nothing to lose."

Why Beautycounter? Why did I think it would be different?

Well, over those seven months I kept thinking about what I had learned during that very first social. How the US hadn't passed a law governing the industry since 1938. I kept thinking about how, when I ran out of everything, I wanted to buy Beautycounter. And here's the biggest one: I kept telling people about Beautycounter. I wasn't even using the products and I would chime into normal conversations about product recommendations with information about Beautycounter.

I made my first purchase as a birthday present to myself - 4 products: Nourishing Cream Cleanser, Nourishing Day Cream, Hydrating Face Oil, and Nourishing Eye Cream. And actually the day that I placed my order, I contacted my friend who I was ordering under and told her that I thought I wanted to sign up. She dropped off her set, so I actually got to start using the products that night!

The skincare blew me away. It was amazing and luxurious to use. But I felt good using it too. Knowing that it was safer for me.

And that was when it hit me.

  • I wasn't drawn to Beautycounter because I'm passionate about skincare. Honestly, I'm not. I like it, but sometimes I go to bed with my makeup still on.
  • I wasn't hooked by the business opportunity. Yes, I loved the idea of direct sales and working for myself. But I had tried and failed at that.
  • It was the mission. It was the fact that the company was focused on doing good as means to do well as a business.

It's still work, but it's worth it

Some people pitch direct sales as a way to make extra money without adding in that it does take some effort. It is work. But, you know how they say when you love what you do, you never work a day in your life? Well, that's mostly true with Beautycounter.
